New Hospitality
Saint
John of God dedicated a great deal of time in his life to prayer in all its
forms and expressions. As the fruit of his prayer, we see him endowed with an
evangelical zeal that transforms his way of going and gives him serenity and
balance. He has a sense of hospitality that springs from his identification
with the design of the Gospel. We appreciate his faith in God, as he discerns
Providence everywhere. We admire his capacity to sense the presence of God in
every situation, above all where love reigns. We esteem his readiness to do
whatever is asked of him for the love of God. That shows us how St. John of
God, from his experience of faith in the love of God, was able to offer a new
hospitality in his time that was different from what was carried out then.
Solidly based on St. John of God, we feel ourselves to be called to live
hospitality with a new spirit. Because of our limitations we are not always
able to be faithful to this objective but we are conscious that prayer will
help us to achieve it; a prayer that is incarnated in life, that will give us
the capacity to stay by the side of the sick and needy in harmony with the Lord
just as St. John of God did.
